Nighthawks Earn 1st Victory Of The Season

BOSTON, Mass. – Thanks in part to a 19 kill night by Nighthawks freshman Patricia Farinas (Miami, FL) and a 22 assist night by senior Marlen Reynoso (Springdale, Ark.), Newbury College got their first win of the season, in their home opener, defeating the Pine Manor Gators 3-1 at Hellenic College on Tuesday night. 

Farinas, who came into the night fourth in the NECC in kills per set with 3.06, will add to her average, thanks to an average of 4.756 kills per set on the night. Reynoso, who ranked seventh in assists per set with 4.06 coming into tonight, will also add to her impressive average after 5.5 assists per set tonight. 

In the opening set, the Nighthawks and Gators would battle for momentum back and forth, to an eventual 18-18 tie. Pine Manor would close the set on a 7-4 run, with the Gators forcing multiple attack errors from the Nighthawks. 

The second set would again be close early, eventually settling to a 17-16 lead for the Nighthawks. On this occasion, however, Newbury would go on a run of their own, scoring 9 of the final 10 points in the set to take the second set 25-17. 

In the third, Newbury and Pine Manor trade points Julia Leggett's (Longview, WA) service ace gave the Nighthawks and early 8-7 lead. Newbury would dominate the remainder of play, including at 18-10 run that saw three aces from Leggett. The Nighthawks would finish off the Bulldogs 25-17 in the fourth set. 

In the final set, the Nighthawks fought off a Pine Manor comeback attempt to take the set 25-22. Newbury broke an early 6-6 tie before closing out the visitors for their first win of the season. 

As a team, the Nighthawks produced a season-high 12 aces;  Julia Leggett would finish the night with a team-high nine aces. Leggett would also contribute a team-high 16 digs.

The Nighthawks look to build off this victory, headed into Thursday night;s match up with Albertus Magnus. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 P.M. at Hellenic College.
