BOSTON, Mass. – An early, first half goal by freshman Amanda Carsodo (Watertown, Mass.) would put the Nighthawks ahead early, en route to a 3-0 victory over the Green Mountain Eagles on a bitter, cool night Wednesday.
Cardoso was the beneficiary of an excellent play by senior Carly Gibbard (Commack, N.Y.) who kept the ball in play on the end-line, with a back heel pass, that found Carsodo who netted the ball for her second goal of the season, seven minutes into the match.
Newbury dominated the flow of play and possession in the match, putting a season-high 32 total shots and season-high 15 shots on goal.
Already ahead 2-0, Newbury would strike quickly in the second half with senior Nicole Kaufman (Miami, Fla.) scoring her first of the season on a ball crossed in from Emily Kivela (Moosup, Conn.) that broke through Eagles goalie Tyah Culp (Eatonton, Ga.), giving the Nighthawks the 3-0 result.
Sophomore goalie Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) got the starting nod for the Nighthawks, allowing no goals in 57 minutes of action before being replaced by freshman Faith Cordes (Staten Island, N.Y.), who made a lone save, in her 33 minutes.
Sass gets credit for the win, improving her record to 4-4-0 on the season. Culp, for Green Mountain, was credited for the loss despite a strong showing, making 12 saves on the night.
The Nighthawks (4-7-0, 1-2 NECC) finish the 2016 regular season with six consecutive conference matches, five of which will be played at home. The first of these matches will be Saturday morning against Becker College; kickoff scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at The Winsor School.
