Nighthawks Drop Conference Matinee to Elms

MEDFORD, Mass. - Blazers sophomore Vanessa Vurno (Salem, Conn.) scored four goals on five shots while freshman Haley Richard (Monson, Mass.) added a hat trick in the Elms Blazers victory over the Newbury Nighthawks 20-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hormel Stadium Facility.

Blazers junior Jackie Soucia (Belchertown, Mass.) and junior Alissa Porfilio (Agawam, Mass.) both added two goals. Freshman Janis Christian (Westfield, Mass.) finished with one goal, two assists, and matched a game-high four groundballs.

Nighthawks sophomore Isabelle Pafford (Greenland, N.H.) finished with three shots, three groundballs, and a match-high three caused turnovers. Freshman Hannah Romanish (Dedham, Mass.) matched Christian with four groundballs.

In the opening 10 minutes, a pair of Porfilio goals bookended a goal by Richard for a 3-0 lead. 

In an eight-minute span in the first half, the Blazers added eight more goals including two by Verno, two by Richard, and two by Soucia for an 11-0 lead.

Verno added two, followed by Christian, giving the Blazers a 14-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, a trio of Blazers tallied their first goal of the season. Senior Meeghan O'Connor (Fall River, Mass.) scored to take a 16-0 lead. Freshman Kelly Scianna (Milford, Conn.) scored her first to take an 18-0 lead. Junior Lindsey McNiff (Kingston, Mass.) followed that for a 19-0 lead.

O'Connor got the start for the Blazers, making two saves in the first half, improving her record to 7-2. Nighthawks freshman Keely Molloy (Staten Island, N.Y.) made a career-high 25 saves, including 20 in the first half.

The Nighthawks continue their season on Tuesday evening at Wheelock College with the opening faceoff set for 7:00. The Blazers continue their campaign with a non-conference match on Thursday as they welcome Wentworth for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff.
