SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Nighthawks freshman Jaymesha Sanders (West Haven, Conn.) has been voted to the New England Women's Basketball Association All-Rookie Team as voted by the head coaches of the region and the announced by the NEWBA Office on Tuesday afternoon.
It's the inaugural season for the All-Rookie Team for NEWBA, however, Sanders is the first student-athlete in Nighthawks program history to be recognized with a Region-Team election or yearly award by the NEWBA.
"I'm just thankful to be able to play the game I love," said Sanders. "I started playing basketball my freshmen year of high school so this is a big accomplishment for me to be named to this Rookie team."
Starting with the Nighthawks final game on Feb. 24, Sanders finished with the sixth-most double-doubles in the region with 15, which also ranked most among freshman in the region. Sanders ranked third in the region in total rebounding with 333 rebounds.
Those 333 rebounds ranked her 12th in all NCAA Division III and most among all freshman in Division III.
Sanders broke the freshman scoring record in the Nighthawks program, scoring 393 points in 2017-18. She was named the New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Year following the season.
"This is only the beginning, there's more to come," said Sanders. "I think the team will be very successful in the future, with all the incoming talent, I think we will be better than ever."
The Nighthawks are coming off a season of 18-9 (14-2 NECC). The 18-win season was the most since 1999-2000 and the 14-win NECC season is the most conference wins in program history.
