BROOKLINE, Mass. - Nighthawks senior Destiny Spears (Arnold, Md.) shined bright on Senior Day, scoring a game-high 21 points while grabbing 15 rebounds as the Newbury Nighthawks defeated the Becker Hawks, 60-54 on Saturday afternoon from Pappas Gymnasium in New England Collegiate Conference action.
Before the start of the game, Spears was recognized for her career achievements to Newbury Women's Basketball. Spears played all 40 minutes on 8-of-13 shooting. Freshman Tatianna Occena (Spring Valley, N.Y.) scored a career-high 17 points including 3-for-6 from the perimeter. Freshman Jaymesha Sanders (West Haven, Conn.) scored eight points to go with 15 rebounds.
Hawks freshman Jazlyn Contreras (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored a team-high 16 points in 31 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Cassidy Harrison (Foxborough, Mass.) finished with 15 points and four steals.
The Nighthawks led by six at the half but Becker's third quarter changed the momentum for the Hawks. Becker used a 17-2 run spanning 4:10 to take a 47-39 lead in the third. Harrison and Contreras combined for 15 points in the run that gave the Hawks an eight-point lead. Becker took a four-point lead into the final quarter. In the third, Becker shot 6-for-13 from the field, including 3-of-4 from deep and 7-of-8 at the line.
The Nighthawks responded to the Becker charge, embarking on a 16-4 run that spanned 7:17 in the fourth quarter as the Nighthawks overtook control 59-51 with 37 seconds remaining. Spears scored nine points in the run while Occena added five more.
Newbury finished the game shooting 5-of-13 from the field and 6-for-10 from the line while holding Becker to 3-of-19 shooting in the final frame.
The win moves the Nighthawks to 15-8 (12-2 NECC) while the loss drops Becker to 13-10 (9-5 NECC). It's the most wins in a season for the Nighthawks program since 2012-13.
The Nighthawks season continues on Tuesday with an 8:00 p.m. game at Lesley. The Hawks also play Tuesday as they host Wheelock for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
