Nighthawks Drop Pair to Mustangs in Non-Conference Play

GAME ONE: Mount Ida 9 - Newbury 1 (F/5)

NEWTON, Mass. - Mustangs freshman Jill Skalski (Cranford, N.J.) finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs, helping the high-powered Mustangs offense to a 9-1 victory over the Newbury Nighthawks on Wednesday afternoon at Mount Ida Softball Field in game one of a non-conference doubleheader.

Mustangs sophomore Alisa Benson (Middletown, R.I.) finished 2-for-4 including a pair of RBIs. Freshman Madeline Smith (San Diego, Calif.) batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored while allowing one run to the Nighthawks in five innings of pitching.

Nighthawks sophomore Averi Johnson (Oregon City, Ore.) batted 2-for-2. Junior Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) went 1-for-3 with an RBI single.

The Mustangs offense was out and running in the first, taking a 1-0 lead on a two-out, RBI single to left by junior Kelsey Weston (Hampstead, N.H.). Later in the inning, Mount Ida executed a double steal, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 lead after one.

The Mustangs broke it open in the second, starting with the first three batters reaching base safely. An RBI groundout by Benson and fielders choice in the next at-bat gave the Mustangs a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning, a two-out, two-run double by Skalski put the Mustangs ahead 6-0.

The offense continued rolling in the third with two Mustangs in scoring position and one out. Back-to-back singles put the Mustangs up 8-0 after three innings.

The Nighthawks broke up the shutout in the fifth with a two-out single to right field by Sass to cut the deficit to 8-1.

The Mustangs closed out the game in the fifth with an RBI single by freshman Caitlin Hogan (Derry, N.H.), giving Mount Ida the 9-1 win.

Smith picks up the win for Mount Ida and improves to 4-6. Nighthawks sophomore Mallory Stefan (Thornton, Colo.) takes the loss, falling to 6-10.

 

GAME TWO: Mount Ida 10 - Newbury 2 (F/6)

NEWTON, Mass. - Mustangs senior Hayley Microulis (Pawtucket, R.I.) batted 3-for-4, including a two-run home run, helping the Mustangs to a 10-2 victory over the Nighthawks on Wednesday, completing the two-game sweep from Mount Ida Softball Field.

The fourth inning home run is Microulis' second this season. Sophomore Alisa Benson (Middletown, R.I.) also went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Freshman Caitlin Hogan (Derry, N.H.) batted 2-for-4 with a triple.

Nighthawks sophomore Arianna Gooden (Bakersfield, Calif.) batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Senior Samantha Libby (New Gloucester, Maine) went 1-for-2 with an RBI. 

Tied at 2-2 entering the bottom of the third, the Mustangs broke the tie on a Nighthawks error to lead 3-2. The next batter, Microulis, singled to left to give the Mustangs a 4-2 lead. The Mustangs would add a third run on a single by freshman Madeline Smith (San Diego, Calif.) to lead 5-2.

The Mustangs added four more in the fourth, including Microulis two-run shot to lead 9-2. 

The Nighthawks held a 2-0 lead after the top of the first on back-to-back singles by Gooden and Libby.

Mustangs freshman Hannah Doherty (Hampton, N.H.) picks up the win, improving to 2-0. Nighthawks sophomore Mallory Stefan (Thornton, Colo.) takes a second loss on the day, falling to 6-11.

The Nighthawks fall to 8-14 this season, while the Mustangs improve to 9-14.

The Nighthawks return to play on Sunday, hosting a doubleheader against Lesley University scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
