GAME ONE: Bay Path 6 - Newbury 3
LONGMEADOW, Mass. - Wildcats junior Lauren Vallee (Bristol, Conn.) and sophomore Taylor Feraco (Oxford, Mass.) each homered as the Bay Path Wildcats took game one over the Newbury Nighthawks 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Feraco finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Vallee went 2-for-4 including the solo home run, the fourth of her season.
Nighthawks junior Tina Babcock (Ayer, Mass.) went 2-for-3. Junior Alexis Vieria (Pawtucket, R.I.) and sophomore Arianna Gooden (Bakersfield, Calif.) both batted 2-for-4. Junior Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) added a two-run triple.
Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Wildcats created distance with Vallee's solo home run for a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning and with two outs, Wildcats freshman Kayla Vance (Clifton, N.J.) provided an RBI double to give Bay Path a 4-0 lead.
The Nighthawks cut the deficit to one run in the top of the fifth, starting with Sass' two-run triple. The next batter, Gooden, grounded out, scoring Sass and cutting the deficit to 4-3.
The Wildcats were able to pull away, starting with Feraco's home run in the fifth to lead 5-3. The Wildcats added one more in the sixth on an RBI single by Vance to lead 6-3.
Wildcats junior Madison Goodhart (Pawtucket, R.I.) takes the win, improving to 3-4 this season. Nighthawks sophomore Mallory Stefan (Thornton, Colo.) gets the loss, falling to 6-9.
GAME TWO: Bay Path 9 - Newbury 8
LONGMEADOW, Mass. - Trailing by one in the bottom of the seventh, the Wildcats used a bases loaded, walk-off walk to defeat the Newbury Nighthawks 9-8 on Sunday, sweeping the doubleheader of NECC play.
Wildcats sophomore Lilly West (Goshen, Mass.) batted 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Junior Lauren Vallee (Bristol, Conn.) and freshman Cameille Keith (Pawtucket, R.I.) both batted 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Nighthawks sophomore Arianna Gooden (Bakersfield, Calif.) batted 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Junior Alexis Vieira (Pawtucket, R.I.) batted 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Sophomore Averi Johnson (Oregon City, Ore.) finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Following a groundout to start the bottom of the seventh, the Wildcats put runners on with a walk and single. A Vallee RBI single tied the game at 8-8. Following another single to load the bases, West stepped in and drew a walk leading to the Wildcats 9-8, walk-off win.
The Nighthawks were out in front with a four-run third inning. With two outs, Nighthawks junior Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) singled to give the Nighthawks a 1-0 lead. After Sass stole second, a Gooden single scored two more for a 3-0 lead. Gooden scored on a Vieira single to give the Nighthawks a 4-0 lead.
The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the third two runs on an RBI single and RBI groundout to trail 4-2.
In the next inning, the Wildcats tied the game on a two-run single by West.
The Nighthawks pulled away to a 7-4 lead in the fifth with the help of three straight RBI singles, but the Wildcats responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs to tie the game at 7-7.
Wildcats sophomore Felicia Gaillardetz (Londonderry, N.H.) gets the win, improving to 6-3. Nighthawks junior Alina Milauskas (Elkridge, Md.) takes the loss, falling to 0-3.
The Nighthawks fall to 8-12 (3-3 NECC) while the Wildcats improve to 11-11 (4-2 NECC).
The Nighthawks continue their season with a doubleheader on Tuesday at Curry starting at 3:00 p.m.
