BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Newbury College Department of Athletics has announced today that Casey Butler has been elevated from Assistant Softball Coach to Head Softball Coach effective immediately.  Butler replaces her mentor, Caitlin Benyi, who departed the institution to begin a career outside of Athletics.

"I'm thrilled to stay a part of the Nighthawk family in this new role," said Butler.  "I learned a lot working with Coach Caitlin last year, both on and off the field.  I think the transition from assistant to head coach will be smooth. We have a lot of talent returning and I'm looking forward to building on our success from last year."

"During our search process, Coach Casey quickly moved to the front of the field of candidates," said Harper.  "This promotion from the Assistant role to the Head Coach will provide stability to the softball program and will continue the momentum of recruiting that Coach Caitlin and Coach Casey have built over the past year."

Last season, Coach Casey was instrumental in guiding the Nighthawks to a program-best 23-17 overall record, including the program's first New England Collegiate Conference Regular Season Championship.  In addition, the 2017 edition placed five student-athletes on the NECC All-Conference Teams as well as NECC Rookie of the Year Arianna Gooden.

Butler, a 2012 graduate of Bryant University, serves as a coach and member of the board of directors for the Mass Drifters Junior Olympic Softball program.  The highlight of her tenure came this summer when the Mass Drifters 18-and-under Gold squad placed third in the 2017 Pony East Zone Nationals tournament.  Volunteering on the coaching staff with Butler was current NECC First Team All-Conference and Newbury career home run leader, Noelle Sass.  Sass currently holds 14 school records in only two collegiate seasons.

The Nighthawks are the reigning National Fastpitch Coaches Association grade point average leader and are looking to post its fourth-consecutive 20-win season and its fifth in six years.  Newbury is attempting to break through with an NECC Tournament Championship after finishing as the runners-up twice in the last five years.
