ATTLEBORO, Mass. - Following a 16-2 conference season, the Newbury Nighthawks have earned their first Regular Season Championship in program history, resulting in the No. 1 seed in the New England Collegiate Conference Tournament.
The 16 NECC wins are a program record in a season for the Nighthawks.
The Nighthawks have been led by sophomore Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) this season. Sass is batting .538 in conference play this season and leads the conference in home runs against conference opponents with eight. Sass' 93 hits so far in her career are the most by a Nighthawk in their first two seasons in program history.
The Nighthawks welcome the No. 8 seed Southern Vermont Mountaineers for the First Round of the NECC Tournament. The Opening Round match will be on Tuesday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the Regis College Softball Field. Southern Vermont Mountaineers have been guided by junior Nicole Matthews offensively throughout the season.
The second-seed, Lesley University, will host seventh-seeded Mitchell College in the first round. The Lynx have boasted the best slugging percentage (.525) and the second-best batting average (.389) in conference play this season.
Regis College earns the third seed as a result of strong pitching throughout the season; the Pride completed the season allowing an average of 1.99 earned runs per game. Regis will host sixth-seeded Elms College to begin the NECC Tournament.
The final first round match-up will feature fourth-seeded Becker College as they host fifth-seeded Bay Path University. The Hawks will look to avenge their final regular season losses against the Wildcats in the last day of the regular season.
The winners of the first round games will advance to double elimination portion of the NECC tournament, beginning on Friday, May 5. These games will be hosted at the highest remaining seed after the play in games on Tuesday.
