NEWTON, Mass. – The Newbury College men's volleyball team knocked off non-conference Mount Ida College in five sets, 3-2, for the second time this season to split Saturday afternoon's tri-match.
Game 1: Newbury 3, Mount Ida 2 (25-18, 21-25, 16-25, 25-20, 15-13)
The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead after a convincing third set victory, but allowed Newbury (4-18) to come back and break a 13-13 tie in the deciding set with two straight points to earn their second win of the year in Mustang City.
Ames tallied 19 kills on a .317 hitting percentage, while Peter Griffenkranz (Deer Park, N.Y.) added 16 kills and 10 digs and Wessel posted 43 assists in the five-set match.
The Nighthawks were paced by 12 kills from Wade Robidoux (Agawam, Mass.) and ten kills from Xavier Brown-Rose (Wilbraham, Mass.), while Nile Fox (Hampton, Va.) and Khalil Paige (Baltimore, Md.) each hit .300 or better in the victory.
Game 2: Fontbonne 3, Newbury 0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-20)
The Griffins opened their account on the day with Brendon Schwartze (St. Louis, Mo.) slamming 11 kills and Jacob Lendy setting up 31 points as they took care of the Nighthawks in straight sets.
Emir Hadzisalihovic (St. Louis, Mo.), Stephen Lendy, and TJ Vorva (Orland Park, Ill.) each contributed six kills as well in the win.
The Mustangs will look to regain their winning ways on Monday when they host Lesley at 6:00 pm in their final non-conference match of the year.
