NEWTON, Mass. – The Newbury College men's volleyball team split Saturday's afternoon road tri-match defeating non-conference Mount Ida College in three sets, 3-0, before falling to #10 Vassar College, 3-0, in their second match.
Newbury 3, Mount Ida 0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-21)
The Nighthawks began the day with their second straight victory against a GNAC opponent. Reigning Player of the Week, sophomore middle hitter Wade Robidoux (Agawam, Mass.) hit a staggering .412 against the Mustangs, registering a match-high 11 kills on 17 attempts with just four errors.
First year setter Luis Aranda (Boyle Heights, Calif.) paced the offense tallying 27 assists in addition to combining with junior middle hitter Khalil Paige (Baltimore, Md.) for seven of the team's 19 total blocks. In addition to leading the Nighthawks with five total blocks, the Maryland native hit a solid .294 with eight kills on 17 attempts and just three errors.
#10 Vassar 3, Newbury 0 (19-25, 12-25, 20-25)
In the second match of the day, Newbury fell to national ranked, Vassar College in three sets. Robidoux added another six kills to finish the afternoon with 17 kills on 34 attempts .
Sophomore right side hitter Xavier Brown-Rose (Wilbraham, Mass.) led the Nighthawks with six kills while Paige continued to dominate the net defensively, recording two block assists. He finished the tri-match with six block assists while tallying 10 kills.
The Nighthawks improve to 2-6 on the young season and will return to the hard-court on Tuesday evening February 9th when they host Elms College at 7:00 p.m.
