BRISTOL, Rhode Island -- The Newbury Nighthawks dropped their 2017 season opener in disappointing fashion Saturday afternoon by the score fo 6-0 at the hands of Roger Williams University. The defeat was in the 1st round of the RWU Opening Weekend Tournament and will move the Nighthawks to the consolation bracket where they will square off against Clark University tomorrow morning at 11:00 A.M.
The Nighthawks could not get going offensively, managing just 9 shots during the contest. Sophomores Nilton De Andrade (Boston, MA) and Alex Strafer (Auburn, MA) led the team with three shots a piece while junior Kevin Teixeira (Boston, MA) tallied two shots.
Sophomore Chris Tran earned his 1st career start in net for Newbury, allowing 4 goals on 14 shots before departing from the game early due to injury. Junior Jarrod Smith closed out the match between the pipes for the Nighthawks and collected four saves but allowed two goals also.
Newbury closes out the opening weekend tournament tomorrow morning before returning home on Wednesday, September 6th when the host Emmanuel College in the inagural game at Hellenic Field.
