NASHUA, N.H. - Daniel Webster gave itself a pair of back-to-back wins using a pair of late rallies to post two come-from behind victories, 3-2 and 6-5 over Newbury in a NECC doubleheader Saturday at Harvey Woods Field.
Game One: Daniel Webster 3 - Newbury 2 (Final - 8 Innings)
In the opener, DWC tied it in the sixth as Rudy Acosta (Nashua, N.H.) led off with a single, moved to third on a stolen base and throwing error and scored on a Mike Pelletier (Pelham, N.H.) sacrifice fly.
The Eagles then won it with a two-out bases empty rally. Dylan McDonough (Billerica, Mass.) singled, went to third in a Mike Gamache (Manchester, N.H.) double, and scored on Hodgdon's single to left.
Hodgdon led DWC with three hits including a double in the opener while Matt Alberino had two. Hodgdon's two-bagger led to DWC's first run in the third as he later scored on a Dan Mullins (Nashua) fielder's choice.
Newbury got three hits from Mitchell Walsh (Westport, Mass.), who gave Newbury a 2-1 lead with a RBI single in the fifth. Billy Stephen (Windemere, Fla.) had put the Nighthawks ahead in the first with a RBI single to score Matthew Sobray (Santa Clarita, Cal.).
Ryan Murray (Farmington Hills, Mich.) finally got his long overdue first win (1-3) going all eight innings allowing one earned run on six hits, striking out seven but walking seven, although he was solid in getting out of two jams – a bases loaded no out situation in the fourth, and a second with two out in the fifth.
Jim McGorry (Oakhurst, N.J.) took the loss (2-3) going the distance for Newbury, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits, striking out three and walking one.
Game Two: Daniel Webster 6 - Newbury 5
In the nightcap, DWC's sixth-inning rally saw four runs come across on three hits. Down 5-2, the big blows came on Dylan McDonough's RBI single scoring Matt Daulton to make it a 5-3 game, Mike Habibi's (Nashua, N.H.) sac fly that scored Alberino to make it 5-4, and Acosta's two-bagger to center sending both Hodgdon and McDonough across for the lead.
DWC plated two in the first on a Daulton ground out scoring Pelletier and an Alberino single that scored Dan Mullins.
Newbury went in front with a three-spot in the second on two hits and was aided by a walk and hit batsman. Radinsky Baez (Roxbury, Mass.) stroked a two-run single to center to tie it and Justin Banks (Corona, Cal.) followed with a sac fly to score CJ Ingraham (Georgetown, Mass.).
Newbury extended the lead with two in the fourth when Stephen laced a two-run single to center scoring both Baez and Banks.
Nasi Nikolopoulos (Burlington, Mass.) picked up the win (1-1) allowing just one hit in 1 1/3 innings of relief of Gamache, who started. Newbury starter Tim Brown (Orange, Conn.) was touched for the loss (0-6).
The pair of losses moves the Nighthawks to 17-15 (6-9 NECC).
The Nighthawks are back on Wednesday night in non-conference action as they travel to Albertus Magnus with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
