Borrero Promoted to Director of Sports Medicine

Brookline, Mass -- Newbury College Director of Athletics, Jonathan Harper has announced the promotion of Danny Borrero to Director of Sports Medicine effective July 1, 2017. Borrero has served as Newbury's first full-time Head Athletic Trainer since August 2014.

"In my three years as Director of Athletics at Newbury, I have been very fortunate to have Danny serve as our full-time Certified Athletic Trainer," said Harper.  "He has become a fixture of the Newbury Department of Athletics at contests, practices and the training room in East Hall. Danny's care of our student-athletes is second to none and is the unchallenged authority in all medical care issues.  His new title of Director of Sports Medicine better reflects his position and falls in line with the newly adopted Division III legislation of Independent Medical Care in his role of Athletics Healthcare Administrator."

Borrero has spent the last three years as the Head Athletic Trainer before serving as an assistant trainer for the Nighthawks the previous three years. Coming aboard in January 2011, Borrero routinely communicated and consulted with the head athletic trainer as well as coaches regarding the health, treatment and conditioning regiments of student-athletes.

"I am grateful for the opportunity Newbury has given me to grow as an athletic trainer," said Borrero. "The student-athletes, coaches, athletic department, and Newbury community have helped me in so many ways. This new position will allow me to continue to be a resource towards the health and wellbeing for our teams and student-athletes."

Borrero is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association and has volunteered his time at the Boston Marathon and the U.S. Figure Skating Championship in 2014.

A native of Somerville, Mass., Borrero graduated from Bridgewater State University in May 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in Athletic Training. Danny is a licensed athletic trainer by the state of Massachusetts and is CPR & AED Certified through American Red Cross.

Borrero's promotion falls in line with new legislation put in place by the NCAA, effective August 1, 2017. The NCAA has moved to specify that an active member institution shall establish an administrative structure that provides independent medical care and affirms the unchallengeable autonomous authority of primary athletics health care providers to determine medical management and return-to-play decisions related to student-athletes; and designate an athletics healthcare administrator to oversee the institution's athletics health care administration and delivery.

This new legislation requires all NCAA Division III institutions to establish an administrative structure that permits primary athletics health care providers to determine medical management and return-to-play decisions related to student-athletes.
